Canadian taxi fare questions, answered clearly.
Short answers explain what the calculator does, when a fare is exact, and why the final taxi meter can differ from an estimate.
How does TaxiRates.ca calculate a taxi fare?
TaxiRates resolves the pickup market, applies the local regulated meter or airport rule, and uses the trip details to calculate the applicable fare. Official flat fares are shown as published rates; metered trips are estimates based on the local tariff.
Are TaxiRates fare estimates exact?
Published flat fares can be shown as exact when the trip matches the official rule. Metered fares are estimates because the final meter can change with traffic, waiting time, route conditions and other charges permitted by the local tariff.
Why do taxi rates differ by city or airport?
Canada does not use one national taxi tariff. Provinces, municipalities, transportation regulators and airport authorities can set different meters, flat-fare zones, minimums or access fees. TaxiRates selects the rule that applies to the pickup market.
Does traffic change the final taxi fare?
It can. A metered taxi normally charges for distance and can also accumulate time-based charges when the vehicle is moving slowly or waiting. That is why TaxiRates identifies a metered result as an estimate rather than promising an exact final total.
Are affiliated booking partners part of the taxi calculation?
No. The taxi fare calculation is produced from the applicable rate rules. When TaxiRates shows an affiliated booking partner, the commercial relationship is disclosed separately and does not change the regulated taxi fare or meter estimate.
Where do the fare rules come from?
TaxiRates prioritizes official transportation regulators, airport authorities and municipalities. Supported city and airport guides identify the applicable source and verification details so the rule behind a fare can be checked instead of relying on a generic national formula.
