How the Toronto meter works

The City tariff is precise, but a route estimate is still a range.

The meter charges 25-cent increments for distance or waiting time. TaxiRates uses the official increments and live road conditions without pretending to reproduce every second of the physical meter.

The first 0.143 km or part thereof is $3.25.

Each additional 0.143 km or part thereof adds $0.25.

03$1 fuel surcharge.

The current City tariff adds $1 per trip, making the familiar starting display effectively $4.25.

Toronto Pearson Airport

Pearson is a separate tariff system.

Trips departing Pearson use GTAA airport tariffs, not Toronto's street meter. For qualifying Toronto street-hail or taxi-stand trips going to Pearson, Chapter 546 says the passenger may choose the applicable Appendix C airport fare or the meter, whichever is lower.

Special airport rule
Booked taxi rates can differ.

If a Toronto taxi is booked through a brokerage, a discounted rate can be offered. An app-booked brokerage trip can also use a higher rate if the price is clearly communicated and accepted before the trip.
