How the Swift Current taxi meter works

Swift Current’s Taxi Bylaw contains a Schedule A tariff for carriage occurring entirely within the City. The current schedule sets a $4.00 minimum each time a taxi is hired and adds $0.35 for each 100 metres, or portion of 100 metres, travelled. The $0.35 distance amount took effect January 1, 2025. TaxiRates applies the same increment rule rather than converting it to a rounded per-kilometre approximation.

The schedule also permits $1.00 for each minute or portion of waiting time where applicable. TaxiRates does not treat normal road travel or forecast traffic as billable waiting. The displayed route estimate therefore uses the distance tariff as its baseline, while actual waiting directed by the passenger can increase the meter during the ride.

Why pickup and destination scope matter

The published tariff is explicitly written for carriage occurring entirely within Swift Current. When all or part of the trip occurs outside the City, the bylaw allows the passenger and taxi owner or operator to mutually agree on the fee. TaxiRates therefore does not extend the City meter formula indefinitely onto highway trips.

This distinction matters for regional destinations, rural properties and airport or highway pickups outside the municipal boundary. A trip that begins and ends in Swift Current can use the regulated formula; a trip that leaves the City should be confirmed as an agreed fare or provider quote.

What the Swift Current result includes

Trips beyond Swift Current

Longer travel from Swift Current can include rural Saskatchewan, neighbouring communities or regional transport connections. Because the City bylaw permits an agreed fee when any part of the carriage occurs outside Swift Current, request a fixed price before departure rather than assuming the local meter formula will remain the only pricing method.

For return travel, calculate from the actual pickup location again. A different municipality can have its own tariff, and an airport or provider may use a flat fare or access charge that does not apply to the outbound Swift Current trip.
