Why TaxiRates still uses the existing Cornwall tariff
Cornwall is actively reviewing its vehicle-for-hire system, but the City clarified on September 4, 2026 that no new bylaw had been adopted and no final decision had been made on a replacement framework. That makes the existing taxi bylaw and tariff the published rule to use until the City formally changes it.
TaxiRates tracks that transition explicitly rather than assuming consultation means the old fare disappeared. If Cornwall adopts a new tariff, the market should be updated at the effective date.
How the Cornwall taxi tariff calculates a local trip
The existing tariff starts at $3.50 for one or two passengers and adds $0.175 for each additional 100 metres or part thereof. TaxiRates rounds routed distance upward in 100-metre increments to follow that structure. The schedule lists waiting at $32.30 per hour and states that the shown fares include HST.
For more than two passengers the schedule also lists a per-person minimum charge, but the current TaxiRates form does not ask passenger count, so that extra is not added automatically.
Where the Cornwall meter rule applies
The tariff applies to trips within City boundaries and to specified trips that remain within five kilometres of the City boundary. For journeys beyond that scope, the published bylaw says the out-of-town rate is to be agreed by the parties before the passenger boards.
That means a long trip to Ottawa, Montréal or another distant destination should not be calculated by stretching the Cornwall city meter indefinitely. TaxiRates uses the local meter where its scope is clear and directs longer journeys toward an agreed fare.
Cornwall and cross-border trips
Cornwall’s published tariff also contains a specific bridge-related charge. Cross-border travel involves customs, bridge access and destination-jurisdiction considerations, so a full international trip should be confirmed with the operator before departure rather than inferred solely from local kilometres.
For a return from the United States, the Cornwall municipal tariff does not automatically govern the pickup. Calculate each direction from the actual origin.
What to verify before a Cornwall taxi trip
For a local ride, confirm the meter is being used under the current tariff. For a route outside the local tariff scope, agree on the fare before boarding as the existing bylaw contemplates. Keep in mind that Cornwall’s regulatory review is active and may eventually change these rules.
