How the Airdrie taxi meter works

The City of Airdrie’s current taxi-business page directs operators to Schedule B of the Public Conveyance and Vehicles for Hire Bylaw and requires every taxi to have a properly calibrated, City-sealed taximeter. Schedule B starts the fare at $4.00 and adds $0.25 for each 110 metres travelled. That distance increment is equivalent to about $2.27 per kilometre, but TaxiRates keeps the original 110-metre increment in the calculation rather than rounding the bylaw into a different tariff.

Schedule B also lists standby or waiting at $40.00 per hour. TaxiRates does not treat ordinary Google traffic delay as automatically billable waiting time. The route estimate therefore uses the distance meter and leaves actual standby or waiting to the licensed taxi meter when that condition occurs during the ride. This avoids inflating a trip simply because a route service predicts congestion.

Airdrie to Calgary Airport has a published $40 pre-arranged minimum

Schedule B contains a separate “Flat Rate Minimum Pre-Arranged to/from Calgary International Airport” of $40.00. A minimum is not the same thing as a $40 fixed fare. For an Airdrie-origin trip to YYC, TaxiRates first calculates the Airdrie meter. If that distance fare is below $40, the pre-arranged airport minimum raises it to $40. If the meter calculation is already higher, the higher meter amount applies. TaxiRates does not add the newer YYC inbound drop-off fee unless Airdrie’s passenger-fare rules are clarified to permit that pass-through.

YYC currently publishes a $4.60 plus GST airport-campus drop-off fee and a $5.10 plus GST terminal pickup fee for taxis. Airdrie Schedule B, however, only expressly lists an airport fee upon leaving YYC. Because the newer inbound drop-off charge is not yet reflected in that Schedule B wording, TaxiRates does not add it to an Airdrie-origin passenger fare without clearer City authority. The YYC-origin pickup fee remains part of the existing YYC/Calgary calculation.

YYC to Airdrie is not automatically the same calculation in reverse

When a trip starts at the YYC taxi stand, the airport states that taxis are regulated through the City of Calgary’s Livery Transport Services and fares are meter-based. That is a different starting jurisdiction from a taxi dispatched in Airdrie. TaxiRates therefore routes an ordinary YYC-origin search through the existing YYC/Calgary airport rule rather than forcing Airdrie’s meter onto the airport pickup.

The $40 Schedule B minimum is still relevant when a qualifying Airdrie taxi is pre-arranged for the airport trip. Because the public booking form does not identify which licensed taxi company the passenger has arranged, TaxiRates does not assume that every curbside YYC pickup is an Airdrie-tariff trip. Running each direction separately is the safest way to see which authority controls the pickup.

TaxiRates does not stretch Airdrie’s city meter across an unverified regional trip

The Airdrie bylaw defines vehicle-for-hire service broadly enough to include transportation from inside the City to destinations outside it, but the taximeter provision specifically says the meter must be turned on while transporting a passenger within Airdrie’s corporate limits. Schedule B provides a special published minimum for YYC, yet it does not give TaxiRates a universal formula for every other destination beyond the city boundary.

For an Airdrie pickup going somewhere other than another Airdrie address or YYC, the calculator therefore switches to guidance instead of extending $0.25 per 110 metres indefinitely. Confirm the full out-of-city fare with the licensed operator before departure. That preserves the verified local tariff without presenting a regional amount the City has not clearly published.

Van luggage surcharge and discounts have specific limits

Schedule B allows a $6.50 surcharge when a customer requires or requests a van with seating for more than four occupants to accommodate luggage or cargo, but the customer must agree to that surcharge in advance. TaxiRates does not add it automatically because an ordinary sedan trip should not inherit a van-specific charge.

The same schedule lists maximum discounts of 10 percent for seniors and 10 percent for preferred customers. Those are discount limits, not automatic reductions for every rider, so the calculator shows the published meter rather than assuming eligibility. A driver or brokerage can explain whether a particular discount program applies to the passenger.

Use exact Airdrie addresses so the calculator can keep the fare inside the right jurisdiction

Airdrie sits immediately north of Calgary, which makes complete addresses especially useful. A destination that contains a Calgary postal description, an airport label or another Rocky View County location can change the rule even when the trip looks geographically close on a map. TaxiRates checks the pickup context before choosing a tariff because the starting authority is often more important than straight-line distance.

For a local Airdrie ride, the estimate is based on the road distance returned by the route service and the exact Schedule B distance increments. The physical meter remains the final trip record. Detours, requested stops and qualifying waiting can change the total, while a route that leaves the verified city scope may require an operator quote instead of a longer version of the local estimate.
