Why Terrace does not have one universal taxi meter

Terrace is inside B.C. Passenger Transportation Region 5. Since January 2026, the Passenger Transportation Board has used a fare-band structure in this region. The regulator sets the permitted range for the flag, five-kilometre fare and time rate, but individual taxi licensees can select an approved meter within that range.

That means a single province-wide or citywide price would be misleading. One Terrace operator may legally use a different approved combination of flag and distance rates than another. TaxiRates therefore treats the Region 5 band as the verified framework and does not convert it into a made-up midpoint fare.

How taxi service works at YXT

Northwest Regional Airport Terrace-Kitimat lists Kalum Kabs for Terrace and Coastal Taxi and Kitimat Taxi for Kitimat. The airport is about 10 kilometres south of Terrace and describes the drive to downtown Terrace as roughly 15 minutes, making taxi service a practical airport connection for local trips.

The airport does not publish one fixed passenger fare between YXT and Terrace. Because the underlying Region 5 meter can vary by licensed operator, TaxiRates calculates a route-based regulatory range instead of assigning one company’s price to every arrival.

For short local trips, the five-kilometre band gives a useful sense of the regulated fare scale. For YXT trips or regional travel toward Kitimat and neighbouring communities, route distance matters much more. The active taxi company can provide the most accurate current estimate or quote for the requested pickup time.

TaxiRates separates those two ideas: the regulator defines the legal meter range, while the selected operator determines the actual meter within that range. This keeps the result useful without presenting a false level of precision.
