How taxi fares are handled in Markham
Markham’s licensing by-law requires taxicab drivers to have a current Schedule of Rate card available and to produce it on request. TaxiRates does not substitute a generic Toronto tariff for that operator-specific rate card.
TaxiRates uses that local rule as the starting point rather than assuming one Ontario or Greater Toronto Area fare. The fare framework is selected from the pickup jurisdiction, which prevents a destination in another city from overwriting the origin’s rules.
How the Markham calculator works
For a Markham pickup, TaxiRates routes the addresses and uses an indicative model built around a $6.40 starting component, about $1.00 per kilometre and $0.20 per routed minute. A low-to-high range is shown because the public model is not a City tariff and real provider rates can differ. The purpose is to give the rider a planning number before they check the driver’s or brokerage’s current Schedule of Rate card.
The planning model is intentionally secondary to the official rule. TaxiRates checked both sources on September 24, 2026, uses the public model only to create an indicative route range, and labels the result so it cannot be mistaken for a municipal tariff or guaranteed provider quote.
Planning taxi rides around Markham
Markham travel spans Unionville, Markham Centre, Cornell, Thornhill, Milliken, the Highway 7 corridor, Markham Stouffville Hospital, the Markham Pan Am Centre and large employment districts along Highway 404. A city name alone is not precise enough for many rides because the municipality is geographically broad. Use the actual address, station entrance or building to make the routed distance meaningful.
When a place has several entrances, loading zones or parking-lot roads, choose the passenger pickup point rather than the centre of the property. TaxiRates uses road routing, so a better origin and destination produce a better fare calculation or planning estimate.
Markham airport and intercity trips
Markham connects directly with Toronto, Richmond Hill, Vaughan, Pickering and other York and Durham communities. The price framework can change as soon as the pickup changes municipality, even when the road distance is similar. A Markham-origin estimate should therefore not be reused for a return trip from Toronto or another city. Pearson Airport departures from the airport also have their own ground-transportation rules and should be calculated from YYZ separately.
Direction matters on regional trips. Calculate each leg separately, particularly when one end is an airport or another municipality with a different regulated meter, maximum fare, broker-set system or flat-rate structure.
What to confirm before a Markham taxi ride
Ask the Markham taxi provider for the current Schedule of Rate card if you want to verify the fare basis before travelling. Keep in mind that a route-based planning range can differ from the actual meter because of the provider’s filed rates, waiting, stops, tolls or a lawful pre-arranged price. TaxiRates labels the estimate accordingly and keeps any sponsored private-car booking option separate from the taxi information.
For any trip with unusual waiting, multiple stops, a toll road or a long out-of-town destination, confirm those details before pickup. TaxiRates focuses on the fare framework and routed trip; it does not silently add unsupported surcharges.
Markham taxi fare FAQ
Is the TaxiRates number an official Markham tariff?
No. It is a clearly labelled route-based planning estimate, while the licensed provider’s lawful rate or tariff controls the actual fare.
Why does the page show a range?
The local framework does not provide one universal numeric fare that TaxiRates can safely apply to every provider, so the range reflects planning uncertainty.
Does the pickup location matter?
Yes. TaxiRates selects the fare framework from the pickup jurisdiction first.
What should I confirm before booking?
Confirm the provider’s current fare method, any flat quote, tolls, parking, stops and other charges that may apply.

Open the related guide when that location is the pickup point. Its own fare framework should control the reverse trip rather than carrying the Markham rule across municipal or airport boundaries.
