How the Medicine Hat meter works
Medicine Hat’s Vehicle for Hire Bylaw requires street-hail and dispatch-hail taxi fares to follow Schedule E. For one to four passengers, the maximum initial charge is $4.00. The meter then adds $0.20 for every 100 metres travelled, which is equivalent to $2.00 per kilometre, plus $0.57 for each minute of applicable waiting time.
The bylaw states that the Schedule E amounts include GST. TaxiRates uses the distance portion for a route estimate and does not convert normal Google traffic delay into waiting charges. If the cab is actually stopped and the taxi meter switches to time, the final fare can be higher than the distance-only estimate.
