Lethbridge no longer has one municipal taxi meter.

Lethbridge City Council approved Bylaw 6422 in November 2023, removing the City-set taxi fare schedule from the Business Licence Bylaw. Taxi licensing, driver requirements and vehicle inspections continue, but the amount charged for a ride is no longer controlled by one municipal maximum meter. That means two licensed taxi companies can quote different prices for the same trip without either price automatically being the official Lethbridge rate.

TaxiRates therefore treats Lethbridge as a provider-rate market. For Lethbridge-origin trips, the calculator can now use a current operator-published distance-and-time formula to provide a provider-specific estimate. It remains separate from a citywide regulated fare because Lethbridge deregulated taxi pricing. Older web pages and archived by-law copies may still show the former $3.80 starting fare and distance increments. Those figures pre-date deregulation and should not be presented as today’s citywide tariff.

Ask for the rate structure before the taxi starts moving.

Because pricing is provider-set, the useful question is not simply “What is the Lethbridge taxi rate?” Ask whether the company will use a meter, a flat quote, a distance-based schedule or another posted pricing method. For an airport transfer or longer trip, request the total or the calculation method before pickup. That gives you something concrete to compare and avoids treating an old municipal rate as if it were still mandatory.

For local trips, enter the exact pickup and destination in TaxiRates. The result page will explain that Lethbridge pricing is deregulated and direct you to confirm the current provider price. Route distance and travel time are still useful for comparing quotes, but they are not enough to create a regulated fare when the City no longer prescribes the meter amount.

Lethbridge Airport is about 5 km south of the city.

The City-owned Lethbridge Airport is located south of Lethbridge along Highway 5. The airport’s current website says it does not offer scheduled passenger service, but YQL remains active for charter, private, medevac, training, agricultural and other aviation. Taxi demand can therefore still exist even without a scheduled airline arrival board.

For YQL trips, use the separate airport guide because airport status and ground-transport details are different from an ordinary city pickup. The terminal’s curbside lane is shared with taxis and public transit. Since Lethbridge taxi fares are deregulated, TaxiRates does not attach an invented airport surcharge or revive the former City meter. A taxi company may instead use its own posted or quoted price.

Calgary, Medicine Hat and regional trips should be quoted separately.

A trip from Lethbridge to Calgary, Calgary International Airport, Medicine Hat or another southern Alberta community is not a short local fare. Even when a local company accepts the trip, the pricing can be a pre-arranged flat amount or another provider-specific method. TaxiRates will not extend an obsolete Lethbridge tariff over a long highway distance simply because the route can be measured.

For these trips, compare the complete quote, cancellation terms, included waiting time and whether GST or other charges are already included. If the return pickup starts in another municipality, that location may have a different taxi framework. A Lethbridge-origin quote should not automatically be assumed to govern the reverse journey.

Does Lethbridge have a regulated taxi meter?

Why does TaxiRates not show one dollar estimate?

There is no current citywide tariff to apply. Showing the former regulated meter would make an old rule look current, while inventing an average would hide real differences between providers.

Pricing is now provider-set. Confirm the company’s current fare method and the amount or calculation basis before the ride, especially for airport and longer-distance trips.

Is YQL still open?

Yes. Lethbridge Airport remains active, but the airport currently states that scheduled passenger service is not available. Charter, private and other aviation activity continues.
